Are Your Gums Part Of Your Dental Care Routine

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff at 1:16 pm under Gums

People often talk about their teeth and how white, discolored or crooked they are – or any one of a dozen other topics related to teeth care. We rarely hear people talking about their gums. It’s a pity since without good, strong and healthy gums, the teeth have nothing but a poor future.

Your gums are the first line of defense when it comes to dental care. This is why dentists and other oral health professionals recommend brushing your teeth and the gums, particularly where your teeth and gums meet. This is where decay often starts with sugars and other acids building up just below the gums in this region.

But my gums bleed a little. Good. If you are using the right brush and brushing correctly, that means you are cleaning the right area. If your gums bleed a little, that is because they are too soft and probably not doing their job in protecting your teeth. Brushing will help to make those gums stronger so that brushing no longer results in a little bleeding.

Brushing is the first step, the second is flossing down to the gum line. Rinsing with water after eating can also help. If you do notice a little bleeding when you brush, chewing a gum recommended by dentists may also help to toughen those gums a little. Remember, those gums are what are holding your teeth in place. If they become weak, they run the risk of infection and they will lose their hold on your teeth.

Look after your gums to the same extent that you look after your teeth. That way you will ensure your mouth stays healthy, your teeth stay firmly in place and you can continue to produce a brilliant smile – each and every day.
