Are Your Teeth Eroding?
Our teeth are considered very strong bones. Yet, they are prone to erosion. Yes, teeth do erode. The exterior of the teeth is covered with a hard substance called enamel. Enamel is the hardest substance in the human body. Over time the enamel undergoes some wear and tear. This is what is referred to as teeth erosion.
The erosion of the teeth is caused by acids that are released by the food we eat. A dry mouth can make erosion faster. The saliva in the mouth helps protect the teeth by making sure the minerals are not washed away by acids.
So, there are two ways you can fight teeth erosion. One, keep away from food that can wash away the enamel. Two, keep your mouth hydrated.
Teeth erosion is not inevitable. You can prevent it. Let’s find out how.
- Cut down on the consumption of acidic food.
- Avoid drinking carbonated beverages.
- Get gastric problems treated.

- Wait at least an hour after you have eaten before you brush your teeth.
- Cut down on snacking between meals.
- Adopt the habit of using a straw when drinking an acidic beverage.
- Follow a proper dental care routine.
Certain medication can also cause your teeth to erode. Inform your dentist of the medicines you take. He/she may ask you to ask your doctor to prescribe substitutes.
Frequent vomiting is yet another reason for tooth erosion. Visit your doctor to find the underlying problem and get the proper treatment.
