How to Take Care of Your Child’s Dental Health
You need to start taking care of your child’s dental health even before she gets her first tooth. Her mouth cannot become a haven for bacteria even before she develops her first milk tooth. Thus, it is important to wipe your infant’s mouth thoroughly after she has been fed.
You should take your child to the dentist when she develops her first tooth. In fact, make it a point to visit your pediatrician if your infant falls ill when she is teething. Don’t ignore fever and vomiting thinking they are normal during teething.
It is important to keep your baby’s tongue clean at all times. Clean her tongue regularly with a soft cloth or a tongue brush meant especially for the purpose. Remember, teeth or no teeth, having bacteria bloom in your child’s mouth will make the foundations of her teeth weak. Never let your baby sleep with a bottle of milk or any sweet liquid. This will cause her to develop baby caries. Yes, she can develop cavities even when she as an infant.
When your baby starts taking solid food, provide her food rich in calcium. Feed her dairy products and other calcium-rich foods like tofu, spinach, broccoli, almonds, sesame, salmon, and sardines.
Some kids suck their thumbs for a long time. Dissuade your child from sucking her thumb or even using a pacifier after the age of six.
Once your child starts brushing her teeth on her own, lead her by example. Preaching won’t help; she will do as you do. So, set the best example for her.
Happy smiling!
