Nutrients for your teeth
Two things help keep your smile sparkling and beautiful – a good oral hygiene and the right food. Eating right is extremely important if you want to enjoy good dental health throughout your life. So, what food is right for your teeth? Let’s find out.
Calcium-rich food
All of us know that our teeth and bones need calcium to remain strong. In order to maintain the strength of your teeth, you should consume food rich in calcium on a daily basis. Some food items rich in calcium are:
- Dairy products such as milk and yogurt
- Green vegetables such as spinach
- Salmon and sardines
- Soybeans and soy products
Fluoride-rich food
Fluoride has been said to be extremely important for the good health of your teeth. In the US, drinking water contains fluoride, providing enough fluoride essential for good dental health. Other sources of fluoride include:
- Tea
- Gelatin
- Fish
- Seafood
Vitamin C-rich food
Vitamin C is an important nutrient for general health. It also helps prevent gum diseases. The chief sources of vitamin C are:
- Citrus fruits such as lemon, guava, mango, pineapple
- Vegetables such as tomatoes, cauliflower, papaya
Vitamin D-rich food
Calcium cannot be properly absorbed in the body if there is a vitamin D deficiency. The best way to get vitamin D is to get a regular dose of sunlight.
Spend a few minutes in the sun everyday. The food rich in vitamin D are:
- Fish
- Egg yolk
- Milk
- Soy drinks
- Liver
There are various over-the-counter nutrient supplements available. However, consuming food rich in the nutrients on a daily basis is always a better idea. Ask your dentist if you need any other nutrient in your diet for your dental health.
