Smoking is an addiction that many people find difficult, if not impossible, to give up. Unfortunately, no matter how much work you put into looking after your teeth, if you are a smoker, chances are you are going to have serious dental problems later in life. That doesn’t mean you should give up on your oral hygiene routine since a good routine can at least delay any problems for many years. Delay these problems, however, and who knows? You may give up smoking before there’s any serious damage.

So what does smoking do to your teeth? At lot. Check out some of these problems – you’re bound to have more than one now with the rest to develop later in life.

Smoking will stain your teeth. It won’t happen overnight, but every cigarette you smoke slowly leaves a stain.

Smoking will affect your breath and people will know straight away that you smoke.

Smoking increases the amount of plaque on your teeth leading to greater incidents of tooth decay.

Smoking increases the amount of bacteria in your mouth further increasing the risk of tooth decay.

Smoking increases your risk of large deep cavities requiring either extractions or expensive restorations.

Smoking increases your risk of gum disease leading to tooth loss and health issues for the rest of your body, including your heart.

Smoking increases your risk of developing oral cancer – one of the leading deadly cancers in the country.

Smoking is not good for your overall health and it’s certainly not good for your teeth. If you are a smoker, you need to pay special attention to your overall oral hygiene routines and you should make special efforts to see your dentist at least every six months – more often, if possible. The more attention you pay to your oral hygiene, the less effect smoking may have on your teeth. However, be warned, smoking will affect your teeth.

Dental cavities are nasty. They bring along pain and extreme discomfort. They make your smile look dull. And they cause tooth loss. You have got to make an effort to prevent them if you like your smile.

Let’s first look at what dental cavities are. Well, they are holes in our teeth caused when the enamel and dentin of the teeth are attacked by acids produced by the bacteria in the mouth. The bacteria release acids from the food debris in the mouth, resulting in cavities. Dry mouth is another factor leading to cavities.

Identifying cavities is not really difficult. Here are some of the warning signs of the problem.

Chalky spots appear on the surface of the teeth.

Brown, dull spots appear as the cavities aggravate.

The teeth feel soft when you touch them.

There is pus around a tooth.

You feel pain in the affected teeth.

The teeth become sensitive to hot, cold, and sweet food.

You suffer from bad breath.

There is a bad taste in the mouth.

Now, let’s look at ways to prevent cavities:

Follow a good dental care routine.

Rinse your mouth after eating or drinking anything.

Drink a lot of water to avoid a dry mouth.

Consume dairy products, fruits, and vegetables everyday.

Drink fluoride-water or use a fluoride-based toothpaste.

Avoid snacking on sweet and sugary food between meals.

See your dentist every six months, or visit him/her earlier if there is a symptom of a dental problem.

You can prevent dental cavities if you pay a little attention to your dental health. Take care.

Take good care of your teeth. Simple! Yes, that is the only way you can prevent dental cavities. Dental cavities give you pain and discomfort and eventually lead to tooth loss. If a few simple steps can help to prevent dental cavities, why not try them?

Make it a point to brush after every meal. Make sure you brush before you hit the bed. This will keep bacteria at bay while you are asleep. Follow brushing immediately with flossing once a day. Use the tongue scraper to clean the tongue everyday.

It is important to keep your mouth hydrated. Drink plenty of water, around 8-10 glasses a day. This will keep your mouth clean and hydrated. Rinse your mouth well after you have eaten or drunk something.

Sweet beverages wash away the enamel of your teeth. So, replace the fruit juice with whole fruits. Use a straw if you have to drink juice. You should also pay attention to the kind of food you eat. Eat balanced meals.

Even if you have allowed cavities to come in your mouth, don’t panic. You just need to visit your dentist, and he/she will provide the necessary treatment.

It is important that you pay attention to your dental health after the treatment. Don’t rely on dental procedures for good dental health. And start taking care of your teeth.

Plaque leads to cavities. So, if you have plaque on your teeth, go for a cleaning session. A session of professional teeth cleaning will ensure that your teeth not only look white but remain healthy.

Take care. Happy smiling!

Most people, regardless of their respect for dental health, know about dental cavities. In today’s post, we will tell you a little more about it.

A cavity means a hole. Dental cavities are the holes that are created in the teeth as a clear indication of teeth decay. Dental cavities are also known as dental caries.

So, what causes these holes in our teeth? It is the bacteria present in the plaque in the mouth. The bacteria release harmful acids that erode the enamel of the teeth. This causes dental cavities.

What can you do to prevent cavities? You need to make sure that there is no plaque formation in the mouth. And you already know how to do that! Not sure? We’ll tell you how.

Add fluoride to your meals, drink fluoride-mixed water, or use fluoride-based toothpaste.

Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water everyday. This not only keeps your mouth clean but also prevents dry mouth.

Stick to a balanced diet. Eating right is a great way to take care of your dental health.

Follow a proper dental care routine. Ask your dentist if you need to tweak your routine to suit your dental needs.

Visit your dentist for regular check-ups. You should see your dentist at least once every six months. Visit earlier if you notice the slightest hint of a dental problem.

If you happen to get dental cavities, do not panic. There are various restorative treatments available to treat cavities. The major ones are:

Dental fillings

Crowns

Root canal therapy

Tooth extraction

If you do not want to reach a stage where you need to get your teeth extracted, start taking care of your dental health today.

Happy smiling!
