We humans are rather strange creatures sometimes. We neglect our teeth, often for years (or decades), and when pain finally gets the better of us, we decide to go to the dentist expecting them to work miracles. Dentists come close to working miracles, however, sometimes the damage is too much. When faced with multiple fillings and extractions, patients often drag the process out over several months.

Often, the best approach is to arrange to take an afternoon off work and to get everything done in the one visit. Dentists can perform a wide range of services in one visit, and this includes multiple tooth fillings and multiple extractions. For the patient, there are a lot of benefits to having as much done as possible in one visit. Consider these points:

One afternoon (or morning) off work

One recovery period

No ongoing pain

No further damage to your teeth

You leave with all your teeth repaired and the damaged teeth removed

Cost – it can be less expensive to have multiple treatments at the one time

There is an important consideration in that list – no further damage to your teeth. Every day you delay treatment, decay digs a little deeper into your teeth. The one recovery period is also an important issue. Every time you have a tooth extraction, there is an interruption to your routine. By having several teeth removed at the same time, the recovery period is virtually the same as one tooth.

Our suggestion is simple. Don’t wait years to have your teeth seen by a dentist. The longer you wait, the more damage and the more expensive the treatment. If your dentist suggests multiple fillings and/or extractions, ask if they can do the work in one visit – you’ll be surprised how much a dentist can do in that one visit.

We live in an era where people (men and women) think nothing of spending thousands of dollars each year on skin creams and lotions, or undergoing treatments such as micro dermal abrasion, Botox, and cosmetic surgery. In many cases, those same people balk at spending a few hundred dollars each year on a dental checkup and clean and polish of their teeth. The problem is, if you only work on the outside of your face, your smile could negate all of the work of a beauty therapist or cosmetic surgeon.

More importantly, you can take out affordable dental insurance that will cover most of the costs involved with preventative dental treatments. You will find that some restorative services such as dental fillings are also well covered by that insurance policy. More expensive cosmetic dental procedures don’t always have the same level of cover. But then, claiming back 50% of the cost of dental crown is still a considerable sum.

If you’re going to go to the expense of cosmetically treating your face and hair, it makes sense to complete the job by having your teeth seen to as well. While most health insurance policies give no or very little cover for plastic surgery, basic dental insurance will cover you for ongoing preventative treatment for your teeth – and if you have been looking after your teeth, that’s possibly all the cover your going to need.

Your hair’s looking great; your skin is looking perfect; can you say the same about your teeth? If not, see your dentist to complete the overall look.

It may surprise readers to learn that some fillings don’t last a lifetime. Most fillings will last the life of that tooth, however, smaller fillings do occasionally fall out. What should you do if a filling does fall out?

Whatever you do, keep your tongue out of the hole in your tooth. That hole is often quite sharp and it can cause small nicks in your tongue. You should also avoid putting anything into that hole, even if you have a toothache. Mild painkillers will generally help out until you see a dentist, and that should be your first reaction.

As soon as possible after losing that filling, call your dentist. They will normally try to fit you into their schedule although they may only place a temporary filling to begin with. If you do have a temporary filling, be sure to return to your dentist at the scheduled time so that a more permanent filling can be used.

Why do fillings fall out? There are a number of causes. Further decay in the tooth is a common reason while rigorous brushing is also often at fault. Constant rigorous brushing can slowly lift the filling out of its hole – in fact, most fillings are lost when either brushing or eating.

The most common food stuffs to cause problems for fillings are the sticky toffee style foods. They stick to the teeth and exert a lot of pressure when pulled away from the tooth – another good reason to avoid toffees and candies.

Fillings do come out from time to time. If this happens to you, consult a dentist – they can quickly repair the problem and have that tooth back to normal.

Tooth decay is a problem that affects most people at some time in their life. For many people, it’s not until later in life that this becomes a problem. For others, it can be a problem from childhood. Tooth decay is fairly easy to remove by a dentist. They use a drill to remove all of the decayed material, then fill the hole that has been left behind. The question most people ask is whether or not the dental filling used is safe.

There are two basic forms of filling used today – amalgam and composite resin. Amalgam has long been maligned due to the mercury that is used to create the filling. Composite resin has been popular for use in front teeth, however, it is not as long wearing as amalgam on the biting surface’s molars. While composite resin is perfectly safe, what about amalgam?

In years gone by, amalgam, or silver amalgam as it is sometimes known, contained large amounts of mercury. Today’s amalgam fillings have very small amounts of mercury and almost all studies done show that these small levels don’t affect a patient. However, for precautionary reasons more than anything, the following groups should talk to their dentist prior to having any work done.

pregnant women

nursing mothers

children

those with kidney disease

While there is no outright evidence that shows that this group have been severely affected, caution should be applied to ensure there are no side effects present. Mercury, even in small quantities, can pass through the placenta to the baby in the womb. Mercury is also carried into breast milk.

In most cases, modern dental fillings of either amalgam or composite resin are safe to use – if you have any doubts, talk to your dentist.

There are times when a tooth appears to be too far gone to be saved. This may be a broken tooth or a tooth that has a lot of decay. For decayed teeth, the dentist can sometimes drill out all of the decay and use any one of a variety of substances to fill the hole that has been created. However, if the decay has extended to the biting surface, a filling may not be appropriate.

In many cases, the tooth’s root structure is still good and strong so it seems a shame to extract that tooth. This is where dental crowns have always been useful. The crown is like an artificial top that is bonded to what is left of the tooth. This saves the root structure while providing the patient with a new strong tooth replacement.

Why is using a crown important? If the root structure is strong, then it forms an essential part of your general dental makeup. As soon as a tooth is extracted, it takes away part of your dental structure. This means the teeth either side are free to move and as they move there is a flow effect to the remaining teeth. This can lead to teeth becoming crooked and changing your overall bite.

By maintaining that tooth’s root system, the remaining teeth are kept in alignment, thus preventing further problems. If you have a tooth that is broken or showing signs of decay, then take the time to visit your dentist. A crown will prevent any further damage to that tooth while also maintaining the overall well-being of your teeth.

We spoke of different toothpastes so today we can discuss different types of toothbrushes. If you check your supermarket shelves, you’ll be faced with a wall of different types of toothbrushes. Short handled, long handled, flexible, and some even with a tongue scrubber on the back. You have also got a choice between soft, medium (or firm), and hard. So which is right for your teeth?

The theory used to be that hard toothbrushes were best as they gave your teeth a good hard scrubbing. The problem is, if you scrubbed too hard, you ran the risk of scratching the enamel. Those toothbrushes are often recommended for scrubbing the grout in your bathroom – imagine what they could do for your teeth.

Scrubbing is a problem that many dentist’s see and the results are most noticeable at the gum line. There are times when a dentist needs to fill these scrub lines, not because of decay, but because the overuse of a toothbrush has worn away the enamel. Even medium toothbrushes can cause this if used to extreme.

The best toothbrush for most people is one that is soft. However, what is most important is not the brush itself so much as the way you brush. Small circular motions are much more effective than scrubbing across the teeth. the circular motion also helps to polish the teeth while removing plaque and food debris. If you’re in doubt about the right toothbrush, ask your dentist.

If you get the brushing action right, then most toothbrushes are then up to personal choice. Soft is the general recommendation, but if you do prefer medium or hard, just remember to reduce the pressure you use. If you overdo it then, rather than cleaning and looking after your teeth, you could be wearing your teeth away.

A cousin of mine is very proud of the fact that she never had to undergo a dental procedure. Though I find her very snobbish at times, I do think she ought to be proud. And why not, she takes care of her teeth well enough never to undergo a treatment. If you haven’t been paying attention to your dental health, not only will you never get to date her, you will suffer from problems like cavities and the like.

Dental cavities are painful. And they just ruin your personality. So, what do you do when you get dental cavities? You can either pray to go back in time when your teeth were healthy or visit your dentist for a restorative treatment. Fillings are considered the best solution for cavities. As the term suggests, this procedure involves filling in your cavities. How? Well, dental fillings are made of different materials like composite materials, metals, alloys, and porcelain. There are also the metal or amalgam fillings.

Wouldn’t your teeth look different after the procedure? Well, Fillings are being made to match the exact shade of your teeth so that they do not look out of place.

The procedure gets over in one visit to the dentist. The time taken for the session depends on the kind of tooth damage you have, the number of teeth affected, and the kind of filling chosen.

People often wonder if the filling procedure is painful. It may be a little discomforting but it is not considered painful. Some people do experience a little pain after the treatment. However, this pain is temporary. You should take care of your teeth well after the filling treatment. If your teeth feel sensitive or you feel any pain, mention it to your dentist at once.

Once you have got your teeth restored, don’t go back to your old ways of ignoring dental health. Start following a good dental care routine. And visit your dentist regularly.

Happy smiling!

There is no dental problem today that dentistry does not have a cure for. Even decayed teeth can be restored. (That does not mean you stop taking care of your dental health!)

Dental fillings are one way to restore teeth that have developed cavities in them. Your dentist will fill in those cavities with a hard material to protect your teeth.

Fillings are made of various different materials like composite materials, metals, alloys, and porcelain. Composite fillings are becoming popular with people as they can be made to match the color of the rest of your teeth to give your smile a natural look.

These days, a single visit to the dentist is enough to get the filling. However, the actual time taken for the fillings depends on the kind of tooth damage you have, the number of teeth affected, and the kind of filling that has been chosen for you.

People experience discomfort during the filling session but this dental procedure is not painful. Yeah, some may experience temporary pain which vanishes after some time.

It is important that you take care of your teeth well after the filling treatment. Make sure you follow a proper dental care routine everyday. Inform your dentist if you feel any pain in your teeth or find them becoming sensitive.

Essentially a restorative treatment, dental filling are also used for aesthetic corrections of teeth. Thus, they help bring back the smile to your face. However, remember, no amount of treatments can do what precautionary care does.

Happy smiling!

Everyone is familiar with the term ‘fillings’, even the ones who don’t keep appointments with the dentist. However, not many understand the filling procedure well. Let me try responding to a few of the frequently asked questions on dental fillings.

What are fillings?

Dental fillings are a restorative dental treatment. You need fillings when your teeth develops cavities as a result of poor dental care.

Are fillings a part of cosmetic dentistry?

Though essentially a restorative procedure, filling are sometimes used for aesthetic corrections.

What are the different types of fillings?

The most common types of fillings are:

Composite material fillings

Metal (amalgam) fillings

Alloy fillings

Porcelain fillings

Composite material fillings are becoming popular with people as they can match the color of the teeth, giving them a natural look after the procedure.

How long does it take to get a filling?

Ideally, you need just one session. However, the duration of the procedure depends on the kind of tooth damage you have, the number of teeth affected, and the kind of filling chosen.

Is the filling process painful?

The procedure does not cause pain. However, it may be a little discomforting. Some people may experience temporary pain after the treatment. Your dentist may prescribe medicines to stop the pain.

Do I have to take special care of my teeth after the procedure?

The only thing you need to do is to follow a proper oral care routine. Inform your dentist immediately if you feel pain or your tooth becomes too sensitive.

Happy smiling!
