Someone the other day asked me what the secret of good dental health is. I smiled and said, “good dental habits.” His reaction? He said, “Aw! I thought you would say a good dental care regime.” A good dental care routine is a good dental habit. And avoiding bad dental habits is another good dental habit. So, you see, it is all about habits.

In today’s post, I bring to you oft-repeated tips that should become habits. Let’s have a look.

Brushing on time, every time: Every time you eat, food particles make your mouth unclean. A thorough brushing followed by flossing can clean the mouth well. So, after every meal, make it a habit to brush your teeth, but not quite immediately. You should wait at least an hour after a meal before you pick up the toothbrush. This ensures that the teeth are no longer vulnerable because of the acids in the food you ate.

Keeping your mouth clean and hydrated: Rinse your mouth every time you eat or drink anything even if it was a tiny piece of chocolate or a sip of juice. Talking about juice, try to consume the fruit instead of drinking its juice. This way, you will get all the necessary nutrition and fiber without the eroding effect of the sweet juices.

Drinking plenty of water: Water keeps your mouth clean and hydrated, along with helping your body get rid of toxins. Drink 8-10 glasses of water everyday.

Keeping gums healthy: Apart from following oral hygiene, make sure that you do not brush too hard on your gums. After you have brushed and flossed your teeth, use your index finger to rub the gums gently. This will ease the blood circulation in your gums keeping them bright.

Dental check-ups: Don’t ignore the importance of expert opinion and advice. Visit your dentist every six months.

Happy smiling!

Habits make a man or a woman. Your habits are what may make someone fall in love with you or despise you completely. What kind of dental habits do you have? Are they adorable or despicable? If you have healthy teeth, I am sure you are already doing what I am about to discuss here.

Try not to drink coffee throughout the day. Yeah, I know stress calls for this, and often you don’t get the kick to work unless you grab that mug of steaming coffee. However, you should know that coffee and tea do more than giving you that kick. Let me not get into a sermon about how too much coffee is bad for your health; I will stick to the visible effects of drinking coffee: it stains your teeth and causes bacteria to flourish in your mouth. What’s the solution? Try switching to non-sweetened green tea. Green tea retards the growth of plaque in your mouth.

Avoid snacking on sweet foods between meals. If you have a sweet tooth, it is recommended you eat all your sweets during meals, not between them. Snacking on sweets between meals increases the risk of bacteria in the mouth.

Avoid drinking fruit juices and fizzy drinks. Fruits are good for you; their juices not so much. First, fruit juices are deprived of the much-needed fiber. Second, fruit juices erode your teeth. Fizzy drinks are worse with absolutely no health value. If you have to drink these, on some occasion, pick up the straw.

Never skip brushing before going to bed. The bacteria becomes all the more active when you are not fighting against them. Your body rests when you sleep giving little resistance to the bacteria in the mouth. This is why it is important to brush your teeth before going to sleep.

Is there any other habit you would like to add to this list?

Do you love your smile? Do you want it to be loved by everyone who receives it? You have got to adopt certain habits in order to make that happen. And these habits are far from being difficult. Don’t believe me? Read on.

You have to brush after every meal and before you go to bed. This will ensure that your mouth does not have debris of food left in the mouth. Leave a gap of at least an hour after a meal before you pick up the toothbrush. The teeth are vulnerable immediately after you have finished a meal. Brushing earlier can harm the teeth.

Floss your teeth after you have brushed. Make sure you floss at least once everyday. This will ensure thorough cleaning of the mouth. Also, scrape your tongue gently once everyday. Make sure you do not clean your tongue too hard.

Rinse your mouth well after you eat or drink anything, even if it was a sip of juice or a bite of a wafer. Once a day, use a good mouthwash to rinse your mouth.

Drink 8-10 glasses of water on a daily basis. This helps keep your mouth clean and hydrated at all times, warding off several dental and gum problems.

Include milk, yogurt or any other dairy product in your everyday diet. Get into the habit of eating fruits instead of drinking its juices. This is because the sweetness in the juice tends to erode the surface of the teeth.

Simple habits, aren’t they? Adopt these and visit your dentist regularly.

Happy smiling!

Good habits are rare. And when it comes to dental care, some of us are reluctant about adopting habits or getting into a routine. We would rather wail in pain as toothache strikes or cavities become a permanent fixture on our teeth than get into a dental care routine. Try adopting a good dental habit today, and adopt a new one everyday for the next three days. You’ll be surprised at the results you’ll see in a month. Don’t you want to sport a bright smile, consistently? If your answer is ‘yes’, read on.

Brush after every meal. Why? This helps your mouth clean and keep bacteria at bay. You won’t have stains on your teeth, bad breath, other dental and gum problems if you adopt this habit.

Floss your teeth immediately after you have brushed. This will help keep the mouth clean. You need to floss only once a day. Flossing helps you reach the farthest corners of your teeth. I would say you floss just after you have brushed your teeth before hitting the bed.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water not only keeps your mouth clean but also keeps it hydrated. Also, water will help your overall health, making your smile glow more.

Eat fruits instead of drinking the juices. If you are hungry, go for a glass of water, not for a glass of juice. And if you are hungry, just eat a fruit. Fruit juices can wash away the enamel of your teeth. It is important you avoid them. And if you ever have to drink a juice, use a straw.

Happy smiling!

Here are some habits we think you should get into right away.

Brush after every meal. Without this, you cannot ensure a healthy smile.

Good dental habits refer to the habits that define a proper dental care routine. Sporting good dental habits helps maintain a scintillating smile. Here is a list of some good dental habits.

Brushing at the right time, the right way
Brushing does not help much if it is not done the right way at the right time. Ask your dentist for the correct way of brushing the teeth. Leave a gap of an hour after a meal to brush your teeth. Always brush your teeth before you go to bed.

Following up brushing with flossing
Brushing alone cannot clean the teeth properly. Floss your teeth once you have brushed.

Snacking the right way
It is important to know what to snack on when you are hungry. A fruit is a better idea than a bar of chocolate. Make it a habit to snack on the right food.

Replacing fruit juices with fruits
While fruits help keep our teeth and gums clean, fruit juices do more harm than good. It is better to eat a fruit than gulp down a glass of fruit juice. A fruit contains fiber that helps keep our mouth clean.

Cutting down on smoking and drinking
Smoking and drinking have immediate, visible effect on oral health apart from the long-term ones. Cutting down on the number of cigarettes you smoke and reducing the amount of alcohol you drink will go a long way in maintaining not only good oral health but also overall health.

Taking in fluoride
If your drinking water does not have fluoride, go for fluoride toothpaste. Your dentist can help choose the right one for you.

Taking in calcium
Consume dairy products as much as you can. Milk, yogurt and other milk products are excellent sources of calcium. Calcium is very important for our teeth’s well-being.

Happy smiling!

Drink plenty of water.
Emphasis on drinking enough water is not an exaggeration. Drinking water helps keep your hair, skin, stomach, and teeth healthy. Drinking plenty of water keeps your mouth hydrated, making the mouth clean and keeping bacteria at bay.

Eat citrus fuits.
Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C which is very important for healthy teeth. Consume fruits like oranges and guavas on a regular basis.

Drink milk and eat dairy products.
Dairy products provide you the necessary calcium to keep your teeth healthy. Consume milk and milk products on a daily basis. However, make sure that you do not indulge in sweetened products and products with high fat content.

Apart from adopting good dental care habits, remember to keep all your appointments with the dentist. Seek advice and treatment on any specific dental condition you have.

Happy smiling!
