That may sound like an unusual statement – teaching your children to like their dentist. Yet, over the years this has been a huge barrier to good dental health. If we look back thirty or forty years ago, everyone feared their dentist. Cartoons and comedy sketches always made fun of dentists, often featuring a dentist with their knee on the chest of a patient as they tried to inset an oversized needle.

Parents also played a roll in developing a fear of dentists. Their words and actions often developed a sense of fear about a dentist, a fear that even back then was not really warranted. Modern dentistry is even less so with most patients leaving a dentist’s rooms today with bigger smiles than when they arrived.

Children pick up on the feelings and fears of parents. If parents are relaxed and talk about their dentist as being their teeth’s best friend, then children will follow suit. Take your child to their first dental check-up and they will most likely leave feeling great about the experience. This will help to build a trusting friendly relationship with their dentist rather than an old-fashioned fear of the dentist.

Why is this important? Research is now showing that people who brush twice daily and visit a dentist for a check-up every six months tend to have far fewer dental problems in later life. That means they save their teeth, and they save a lot of money – restoring teeth can be an expensive process while preventative treatment is relatively inexpensive.

If you teach your children to like and trust their dentist now, they may well thank you later in life when they still have all of their teeth.

Got cracks in your teeth or broke a tooth? You don’t have to live with it. Pay a visit to your dentist and he/will recommend a treatment for you. Inlays and onlays are a kind of restorative dental treatment that is used to restore cracked and broken teeth.

Inlays and onlyas are used typically in cases where a dental filling does not satisfy and there is no requirement of crowns. Inlay and onlays are made of porcelain, gold, or composite resins.
While an inlay covers one tooth, onlays are spread over the chewing surface of multiple teeth.

Inlays and onlays are of two types: direct inlays/onlays and indirect inlays/onlays. The direct inlay/onlay is put directly on the tooth. It is then taken out and hardened, and then fixed once again. The indirect inlay/onlay takes longer to be fixed. It is prepared in stages: first a mould is prepared by using a soft material on the tooth; next, the mould helps prepare the actual inlay/onlay in the laboratory. The patient is given temporary filling while the inlay/onlay is being made.

When fixing the inlay/onlay, the area around the tooth is numbed using an anesthesia. Then, depending on the type of inlay/onlay required, the procedure is carried. Typically, it requires two visits for the treatment. However, with technological advancements, it is possible to fix a direct inlay/onlay in a single visit.

You no longer need to feel embarrassed if you have cracks on your teeth. Your dentist can treat your teeth and help you smile with confidence.
