Teeth whitening has become big business with thousands of web sites set up selling the latest and greatest teeth whitening products. You know, there is really only one sure way to achieve a restoration of your gleaming white teeth – visiting a dentist. We may be biased, of course, but consider some of these points.

Before having your teeth whitened you need to have them thoroughly cleaned and all the tartar removed – otherwise, you are really whitening tartar, not the tooth itself. Dentist and dental hygienists are trained to clean teeth. Sometimes it can take more than one visit and the patient needs to undertake a regular teeth cleaning regimen themselves.

Once your teeth are clean, the dentist can then apply the best teeth whitening agents that are suitable for your teeth. By using the right products, your teeth can be returned to their normal colors. By using the wrong products, you can do further damage to your teeth including eroding the enamel. This is why we urge caution when using mail order products.

That is not to say that all mail order products are bad for you. If you want to do the process yourself at home, at least discuss the issue with your dentist. They are normally only to happy to advise which products have a history of being effective and which products have a history of doing damage.

Of course, while discussing teeth whitening with your dentist, you should have your teeth cleaned in readiness for any whitening treatment. It will at least give your teeth the best chance of restoring their gleam – and with it, your brilliant smile.
