What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Published by at 12:39 pm under Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry has probably gone through one of the biggest revolutions in general dentistry over the last ten years. Dentists are now coming into the field specializing in certain areas, one of which is cosmetic dentistry. Why? It’s pretty obvious. Their work involves restoring smiles to the faces of patients.

Any activity that is designed to improve the look of a patient’s teeth could be classed as cosmetic. Teeth whitening is one that is hugely popular at present and, for most people, quite effective. Other cosmetic applications include onlays and inlays, both designed to make the teeth look natural again.

Another area that could be considered cosmetic dentistry include veneers. Again, this is a process that is designed to return teeth to its natural looking state.

Do these processes work? Just ask the patients that come in. To see them walking out again tells the whole story. In the past, patients left holding their jaws vowing never to return – now, patients leave with gleaming teeth singing the praises of the dental profession.

More specialized cosmetic dentistry involves remodeling of teeth. This may involve contouring and reshaping of a tooth, especially if it is showing signs of wear, or has minor chips or breaks. This is the kind of work that many dentists enjoy – rather than drilling or extracting, they are using their craft to renew and return teeth to a perfect state in terms of look and alignment.

If your teeth are a little out of alignment, showing signs of wear and tear, or perhaps even starting to chip – see your dentist. You will be surprised at how far cosmetic dentistry has come in recent years. The one thing I do know. Given the chance, your dentist can bring back that sparkling smile of yours.
