What Should You Know About Dental Implants?

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff at 12:43 pm under Dental Implants

Dental implants are becoming increasingly common, but what are they really?

The simplest answer is that, when a tooth is completely lost because of severe decay or an injury or accident, a dental implant can be used by the dentist to create a permanent replacement for the lost tooth. Unlike a partial denture that needs to be removed for cleaning, implants effectively become just another tooth; a support is placed into the jaw, and the “tooth” is secured to it.

Providing a replacement for a single lost tooth might be the most common use of dental implants, however it is not the only purpose that the serve. An implant may be used to secure a full or partial denture in order to get a more secure fit. Implants can also be used as a brace for an existing tooth that is loose but not lost.

In addition to providing cosmetic benefits for the patient – dental implants serve to close gaps and maintain the appearance of a full, healthy smile – there are health benefits as well, most of which involve the patient’s bite. With gaps between the teeth, remaining teeth are likely to shift; that creates disturbances to the bite which causes problems with chewing and, ultimately, getting adequate nutrition.

Those are the basics about dental implants; but the most important thing that you’ll want to know is whether or not they are the right solution for your needs. In order to determine that, you’ll need to make an appointment with your dentist to discuss implants and other options.
