When Your Gums Stop Being Friendly

Published by Wayzata Dental Staff at 12:03 pm under Gums

Your gums give your teeth support. They are the ones that determine the shape of your smile. They are important; so, if you have been paying attention only to the teeth, you are asking for trouble. The two gum diseases – gingivitis and periodontitis – can wreak havoc in your mouth. Gingivitis is still bearable and can be treated fast; periodontitis is its evil brother who can make life miserable. If you have not paid enough attention to your oral health, you are likely to be affected by these diseases. You can prevent these from torturing you by identifying their symptoms.

Here are some of the most obvious symptoms of gum diseases.

  • The gums appear swollen and red. This is an early sign of gum disease.

  • The gums feel softer than normal. It is a good idea to touch your gums when something does not feel right. If you have a gum disease, your gums will feel soft.
  • The gums bleed without much pressure. If your gums bleed often with or without applying pressure, you should see your dentist immediately.
  • The breath smells bad. Occasional bad breath is not a concern but if you have bad breath most of the time, visit your dentist at once.
  • The gums change their color from pink to red. This is a clear indication of the gums being infected.
  • The gums sag and appear loose, giving more space to the teeth.
  • The teeth loosen and the gap between teeth starts widening.
  • There is pus between the teeth and the gums. This suggests that the gums are infected.
  • There is a sour taste in the mouth. Gum diseases cause your breath to smell bad and your mouth to taste sour.

Don’t ignore the rest of your mouth while taking care of your teeth. Keep smiling!
